(2)
Men attached to sense-objects, ever obsessed by thought
find it difficult to control the mind because of the strength of their vasanas.
For men constantly active, their mind attached to sensory objects,
because of their strong impressions, the mind becomes difficult to control.
(3)
One should control the fickle mind by controlling the breath
and then it, like tethered animal, ceases to stray.
Man should subjugate that wavering mind by restraint of life-breath.
The mind does not move like an animal entangled in a net.

The mind does not move like an animal entangled in a net.
(4)
With the control of breath, control of thoughts also is achieved.
When thoughts are controlled one stands established at their source.
By the restraint of Prana, the check on the activities will be established.

(5)
Control of breath means merely watching with the mind the flow of breath.
Through such constant watching kumbhaka does come about.
Watching the life breath by the mind is regulation of Prana.
Retention results by such watching all the time.

That is: rechaka should be done for one unit of time; pooraka for one unit;
and kumbhaka for four units. Thus the channels of life force are purified.
Exhalation has to be done once, inhalation to be done once and the retention four times.
As a result the nerve channels are purified.

Others, that is, jnanis, define rechaka as giving up the idea 'I-am-the-body',
pooraka as the quest for the Self, and kumbhaka as sahaja-sthiti or abidance in the Self.
Other Jnanins say that the abandonment of the notion of the body as the Self is exhalation,
the seeking of one's Self is in inhalation and the natural state of poise is retention.

Also by repetition of mantras, the mind gets controlled.
Then the mantra becomes one with the mind and also with the prana.
Or else, by the japa of Mantra, subjugation of mind take place.
Then Prana and Mantra will become one with mind.

(11)
When the syllables of the mantra become one with the prana, it is termed dhyana
and when dhyana becomes deep and firm it leades to sahaja sthiti.
The union of the life force with the letters of the Mantra is known as meditation.
Meditation acts as the firm ground for the natural state.

Also by constant association with great, enlightened seers
the mind gets merged in its own source.
Or else, by keeping constant company with the great good men of exaleted minds,
mind wil get merged in its place.

mind wil get merged in its place.
