Having thus explained the truth regarding the Heart, Sri Ramana Muni,
the best among the knowers of truth, spoke of the method controlling the mind.

The sage Ramana, excellent among the knowers of the Truth,
having thus defined the truth about the heart, spoke on the means of controlling the mind.

(2)

Men attached to sense-objects, ever obsessed by thought
find it difficult to control the mind because of the strength of their vasanas.

For men constantly active, their mind attached to sensory objects,
because of their strong impressions, the mind becomes difficult to control.

(3)

One should control the fickle mind by controlling the breath
and then it, like tethered animal, ceases to stray.

Man should subjugate that wavering mind by restraint of life-breath.
The mind does not move like an animal entangled in a net.

(4)

With the control of breath, control of thoughts also is achieved.
When thoughts are controlled one stands established at their source.

By the restraint of Prana, the check on the activities will be established.
When activities are checked, the person is established in the birthplace of these activities.

(5)

Control of breath means merely watching with the mind the flow of breath.
Through such constant watching kumbhaka does come about.

Watching the life breath by the mind is regulation of Prana.
Retention results by such watching all the time.

(6)

For those unable to achieve kumbhaka this way,
the method of Hatha Yoga is prescribed.

For those who are not capable of practising retenton under this method,
The Hatha Yoga method of achieving retention is prescribed.

(7)

That is: rechaka should be done for one unit of time; pooraka for one unit;
and kumbhaka for four units. Thus the channels of life force are purified.

Exhalation has to be done once, inhalation to be done once and the retention four times.
As a result the nerve channels are purified.

When they become pure, the breath gets controlled gradually.
Complete contol of breath is called suddha kumbhaka.

In the purified nerve channels, Prana gradually comes under control.
The control of Prana by all means is said to be the pure retention.

(9)

Others, that is, jnanis, define rechaka as giving up the idea 'I-am-the-body',
pooraka as the quest for the Self, and kumbhaka as sahaja-sthiti or abidance in the Self.

Other Jnanins say that the abandonment of the notion of the body as the Self is exhalation,
the seeking of one's Self is in inhalation and the natural state of poise is retention.

Also by repetition of mantras, the mind gets controlled.
Then the mantra becomes one with the mind and also with the prana.

Or else, by the japa of Mantra, subjugation of mind take place.
Then Prana and Mantra will become one with mind.

When the syllables of the mantra become one with the prana, it is termed dhyana
and when dhyana becomes deep and firm it leades to sahaja sthiti.

The union of the life force with the letters of the  Mantra is known as meditation.
Meditation acts as the firm ground for the natural state.

(12)

Also by constant association with great, enlightened seers
the mind gets merged in its own source.

Or else, by keeping constant company with the great good men of exaleted minds,
mind wil get merged in its place.

This is the sixth chapter entitled 'THE MIND CONTROL'
in Sri Ramana Gita, the Science of Brahman, and the Scripture of Yoga
composed by Ramana's disciple Vasishta Ganapati.
